Songs of a Lifetime - 1

Some songs will always stay with you. For ever. Maybe its the tune that works, maybe its the words that mean so much that you can't get it out of your system. These songs become like the soundtrack to your life, echoing in your head whenever an identifiable situation arises.
Here's the first in my series. One of the most beautiful songs ever penned by Gulzar. The film- Anand. Music- Salil Chowdhury. Lyrics- Gulzar. Vocals- Mukesh.

Maine tere liye hi saat rang ke sapne chune
Sapne surile sapne
Kuch hanste, kuch rote,
Tere aakhon ke saaye churaye, rasili yadoon ne.

Choti bate, choti choti baaton ki hai yaadein badi,
Bhule nahin, biti hui ek choti ghadi,
Janam janam se aakhein bichayi,
Tere liye in rahon main.

Bhole bhale, bhole bhale dil ko behelate rahein,
Tanhayi mein, tere khayalon ko sajate rahen,

Kabhi kabhi to aawaj dekar,
Mujhko jagaya khwabon ne.

Ruthi raate, ruthi hui raaton ko jagaya kabhie,
Tere liye, biti subhah ko bulaya kabhie,
Tere bina bhi, tere liye hi,
Diye jalaye ratoon mein.

Maine tere liye hi saat rang ke sapne chune
Sapne surile sapne
Kuch hanste, kuch rote,
Tere aakhon ke saaye churaye, rasili yadoon ne.

Cheers!
Abhishek.

my favourite song from the same movie: " kahin dur jab din dhal jaye"..makes me want to cry...which is a little odd considering its my favourite song...but then there you are..

those were the days. i never buy cds for classic hindi film songs. i prefer the vinyl long playing records ( i have a huge collection). Lps have the purity which Cds totally lack. the music from the 60s & 70s sound best on records. both hindi and english.

my fav Gulzar songs are from Aandhi. they are so abstract.

viva la vinyl, cds are bad medicine.

ron - gulzar could be so brilliant through his lyrics. 'kahin door' is a gem. I prefer 'zindagi kaisi hai paheli' to it though. song that never fails to choke me up - 'akash bhora surjo tara' -anjan dutta. i guess is bring out my middle class bong sensibilities.

whitelight - u da man. i couldnt agree more. nothing beats the sound of a 45. they are so much in short supply though. hardly any of the stores sell them anymore. pity.

Check out free school street in Cal. Chor Bazaar here in Bombay is a great place to hunt for these records. I have picked up some really expensive recors at dirt cheap prices. Delhi, too, has few people with good Lp collection.

"Choti bate, choti choti baaton ki hai yaadein badi,Bhule nahin, biti hui ek choti ghadi" -- What beautiful lines! Anand is a crown jewel achievement in music & cinema. Personally my fav is "kahin door" from the same movie ..Every time I listen to it , I feel the greatness of salilda and haunting voice of Mukesh ...

i dnt knw why songs hese dfays have become so horrendous.

speaking of bangla songs i love anjon dutta "akash bhora", manna deys "coffee house" and "aaj shorote"..actually all manna dey songs...difficult to choose one. have u heard sumons "tomake chai"? simple lyrics..but amaaaazzziiiingg!!

i guess i am a hopeless romantic..siiigh.will get back to writing boring press releases now.

cogito - it angers me to date that salilda didn't get the due that his genius deserved.

Just stumbled upon your blog... Blog-hopping :)

Nice post on a lovely song... And yes, it irks me too that Salil never got the due a person of his caliber deserved. But again, genius is rarely understood in its time. Guess, he was just too ahead of his times.
